Endodontics & Root Canals

A root canal is a treatment performed to save a tooth that is severely damaged and would otherwise need to be extracted. If you suffer from one or more of the following symptoms, you may require a root canal treatment:

Frequently Asked Questions

Restorative Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Modern techniques and local anesthetics make root canals no more uncomfortable than receiving a standard filling. Our team prioritizes your comfort, using effective numbing to ensure the procedure is virtually painless while removing the infection that causes your toothache in the first place.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

Common signs include persistent tooth pain, extreme sensitivity to hot or cold, gum swelling, or a darkened tooth. If the inner pulp becomes infected or damaged, a root canal is necessary to save your natural tooth and prevent the need for an extraction.

What are dental implants?

In a typical dental implant process to replace one or more missing teeth, you’ll receive these components:

  • The Dental Implant: A titanium tooth root naturally joined to the jaw.
  • An Implant Abutment: A custom connector that is attached directly to the titanium root, creating a stable foundation to place a tooth crown on.
  • A Tooth Replacement: One tooth is replaced with a tooth crown—the top and sides of a new tooth. If you are missing multiple teeth, we’ll use a bridge or have a denturist fabricate some implant-supported dentures.

Dental implant placement involves surgically inserting a titanium post into the jawbone, allowing it to fuse securely for long-term stability. We’ll monitor you closely to ensure proper healing, careful management of discomfort, and a precise timeline for optimal results.

How long does dental implant treatment take?

The dental implant procedures take about an hour or up to two hours in some instances. The total treatment time varies from several months to more than six months, depending on several factors. However, we may place a temporary artificial tooth or crown so you can chew and smile naturally throughout the process.

Overall implant treatment includes:

  • A consultation
  • An exam
  • Dental x-rays
  • Healing time

If you lack bone density in your jaw, you may require a jawbone graft to thicken it enough to integrate the implant. Bone graft surgery may add another few months to the treatment.

How long do dental implants last?

Made of titanium or other incredibly durable metals, we expect each dental implant to be with you for a lifetime—or at least 20–25 years. Most dental implants become naturally joined to your bone during the integration process. These metals are biocompatible, meaning we’re confident your body will accept them forever.

Is the dental implant procedure painful?

Not at all. We use sedation dentistry to keep you comfortable throughout your visit. During dental implant surgery, we’ll use an anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort.

Are dental implants safe?

Absolutely! The dental implant process is recognized as one of the safest dental procedures for patients of all ages. Implant therapy has been used for over 50 years.

Who qualifies for dental implants? Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Every patient is unique. During your consultation, we’ll check your oral health and dental history, examine your teeth and gums for general dentistry issues, and take 3D scans. This will help us confirm that you are a good candidate for dental implants.
